A hot air balloon carrying 21 people caught fire mid-flight over Santa Catarina, Brazil, killing eight passengers. The rest, including the pilot, survived and were hospitalized after the horrific incident.

According to witnesses, the fire originated inside the basket. The pilot attempted to descend immediately and urged the passengers to jump when the balloon was near the ground. Some jumped, but others did not. The flames spread, and due to the balloon’s heavy load, it began to ascend again before finally plummeting due to a loss of lift.
Three victims were found embracing each other at the moment of their deaths, a heartbreaking detail that underscored the magnitude of the tragedy. Local authorities launched an investigation into the condition and operation of the balloon. The operating company claimed to have complied with regulations and asserted that there had been no previous accidents.
Brazilian officials, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and offered federal support to the survivors. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about safety measures in air tourism.
